Why You Should Create Custom Cut Settings for Cardstock

(Spoiler: Default settings rarely cut it.)

If you’ve ever selected “Intricate Cardstock” or “Medium Cardstock” from your machine’s menu and still ended up with torn corners, incomplete cuts, or frayed edges — you’re not alone. Most cutting machines come with default material settings, but those settings are not one-size-fits-all.

In fact, they’re often based on the machine brand’s own cardstock line — which means if you’re using a different brand, finish, or paper weight, your results can be hit-or-miss.


Why the Default Settings Fall Short

Those pre-loaded material settings are convenient, but they make assumptions:

  • That your cardstock is the same thickness, density, and finish as the brand’s own product
  • That you’re using standard shapes and not pushing for detailed, precision cuts
  • That your blade is fresh and your mat is sticky — which may not always be true!

What works for one cardstock might fail on another, even if both are labeled the same weight.


Not All Cardstock Is Created Equal

Cardstock is usually labeled by weight — 65lb, 80lb, 100lb — but that’s only part of the story. The way the paper is made, and what’s layered on top of it, also affects how it cuts.

  • Paper density varies between brands.
    One brand’s 80lb might be easier to cut than another brand’s 65lb — it depends on how tightly the fibres are packed.
  • Coatings and finishes make a big difference.
    Glitter, foil, shimmer, and textured cardstocks require completely different pressure settings and may need more passes or even a stronger blade.
  • Even smooth cardstock isn’t always the same.
    Some feel soft and cut like butter, while others have more resistance and cause tearing if your settings aren’t dialed in.

Solid-Core vs White-Core

Core type is another overlooked factor:

  • Solid-Core Cardstock has colour all the way through — what you see on the surface is what you see in the cut lines. These are usually more dense and may require a deeper cut to fully pierce.
  • White-Core Cardstock has a coloured coating on a white inner layer. While often easier to cut through, it can also fray or show white edges if overcut.

Knowing what kind of core you’re working with can help you avoid:

  • Hairline cuts that don’t go all the way through
  • Peeling edges
  • Unwanted white fuzz around tight curves or corners

…your cut settings become critical. A small tweak in pressure or blade depth can mean the difference between a clean pull-away and a mess of half-torn cardstock.

  1. How do you use your test page to determine the settings for a project when all the variables change with each sheet of cardstock?

    1. The test page isn’t intended to determine the setting for every individual sheet of cardstock. I use it to establish a good baseline custom material setting for a particular type/brand/weight of cardstock.

      For example, I tested Recollections 65 lb cardstock and used the results to create a custom setting specifically labelled Recollections 65 lb. I did the same thing separately for Astrobrights 65 lb. Even though they’re both 65 lb cardstock, they’re different products and don’t necessarily cut the same, so they have separate settings.

      There will always be smaller variables, blade condition, mat condition, humidity, manufacturing batches, etc. Sso no cut setting is magically universal forever. But once I’ve established a reliable baseline for that material, I’m generally only making minor adjustments if necessary rather than guessing at pressure and passes every time I start a project.

      That’s really the purpose of the test page: find the sweet spot for the material you regularly use, save it as a custom setting, and now you have a repeatable starting point.
